FAQS
hidden first field
How much does it cost to replace a shower screen?
There are various answers to this question, with the ultimate price impacted by a number of factors. The available range of frameless, semi-framed and fully-framed shower screens carry different price tags, with the fully-framed option tending to be the least expensive.
These different options appeal to different people based on things like budget, personal taste, the space you have to work with, and your existing bathroom decor.
To give you a very general indication, the installation of a new, standard, single-panel shower screen can cost between $200 and $400, depending on the complexity of the job. A two-panel frameless shower screen is likely to incur a slightly higher cost, while a three-panel sliding door screen could cost well in excess of $400.
Additionally, the costs of shower screen installation can vary based on additional factors including the type of glass you choose – clear, frosted or textured? – and whether the specialist skills of an installer with experience in your specific type of installation are required. For instance, the installation of a frameless shower screen requires a different skill-set to that of a standard single-panel.
Customised shower screen installations involve extra complexities, perhaps even requiring a professional door or window installer to complete the task. The more specialist skills required, the more the cost of the installation can increase.
While shower screens are generally produced in standard sizes, purchasing a custom-sized screen may also end up adding to the overall cost. Basically, the larger and less ‘standard’ your screen, the more expensive it is likely to become.
When you add to all of that the many other impacting factors such as transportation, the labour market, and cost of living, the reasons for the variance in installation costs becomes apparent.

What are standard shower screen sizes?
The average size of an Australian shower is 900mm x 900mm, although this can vary greatly depending on shower type – frameless, semi-framed, fully-framed, pivot, sliding, walk-in and compact – as well as overall bathroom size and layout, plus available budget.
At the other end of the scale from the 900m spacious single walk-in shower might measure somewhere in the region of 1800mm x 1000mm. And for homeowners who live in properties with more space, double showers are becoming increasingly popular, with dimensions in the region of 1600 mm x 1000 mm, or more.
And of course, showers with appropriate access for people living with physical disabilities need to consider factors like space for grab rails and easy wheelchair access, meaning 2000 mm x 2200 mm is required as a minimum.
So, as with most of these things, there is no one-size-fits all solution, with your ultimate choice of shower screen depending heavily on your own unique circumstances.
Which is better framed or frameless shower doors?
Again, the answer to this question is not as straightforward as identifying one option as being better than another. It’s all about budget, functionality, and personal taste, amongst many other things.
With frameless solutions, our toughened frameless glass is made at a thickness of 10mm. When used to create your shower screen or door, this means a durable, practical and self-supporting glass panel solution, with no requirement for a metal framing system to keep the panels in place. The result is a simple, sleek and modern look, sought after by so many for its minimalist charm.
This option also offers the same, if not even better, functionality when compared to the alternatives, and is the smart choice for smaller bathrooms as it requires less space.
Semi-frameless systems are another popular option. Their 6mm toughened glass is combined with subtle natural aluminium framing elements which provide the necessary strength, while still allowing for a sophisticated design.
It’s a solution that combines the stability of the traditional fully-framed shower screen, with the minimalist elegance and visual appeal of a frameless option. Flexible in design, you can select from a range of finishes to complement your existing space, with all frames and other extrusions powder-coated for a colour of your choice. And with a lower associated price tag than fully-framed alternatives, this option provides a great compromise.
Are frameless shower screens safe?
Safety is our number one priority! Toughened glass used in frameless, semi-frameless and fully-framed shower screens, built at a thickness of between 6mm and 10mm, not only allows them to be self-supporting, but the high temperature heating process used to strengthen the glass makes it extremely durable. In the rare event it does shatter, the glass is designed to break into cube-shaped pieces rather than jagged and sharp shards, dramatically reducing the risk of injury.
Over and above the thickness, glass can also be laminated for extra strength and protection. Laminated safety glass uses two panes of glass placed on either side of a piece of PVC film. Similar to toughened glass, if it does break it will result in the creation of less-harmful cube-shaped pieces.
Australian Standards outline specific criteria for shower screen glass safety. Laws relating to the types of glass that can and can’t be used are stricter than ever before. Today, shower screens are considered to be far superior for safety when compared to older iterations missing these essential safety elements.
What should I look for when buying a shower screen?
There are lots of things to consider when buying a shower screen. Your decision might be influenced by everything from available budget, to bathroom size and layout, the type of glass you choose, appropriateness of aesthetic in the existing surroundings, and the complexity of the installation.
Aside from safety, functionality must always be your number one consideration. Your shower and bathroom in general need to offer a comfortably usable space for all. A number of additional features can be incorporated as part of your shower installation that could enhance the general functionality of the space. When exploring these options, you’ll need to consider the dimensions of the space you’re working with, as well as their logical positioning.
One particularly important factor to most homeowners is aesthetic. Glass used in the manufacture of today’s shower screens is available in a wider range of colours, styles and finishes than ever before, meaning you can make selections for a custom design that will perfectly suit your space and tastes.
